History of Heralds of Good News

A HISTORY OF THE MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF HERALDS OF GOOD NEWS

That the word of God may run and be glorified and the kingdom of God be proclaimed and established throughout the world…

14 October 1984. Driven by an inspired necessity that was felt in the Church and among the masses, a Missionary Society was approved of its draft Constitution this day. The Heralds of Good News was born!

The starting of the Missionary Society of Heralds of Good News was indeed the result of the single-minded devotion of its founder, Very Rev. Dr. Jose Kaimlett, who read and foresaw very early the signs of the times and the need of the Church and acted upon the will of God. He dreamt of a vibrant group of hardworking, saintly and zealous men, who would dedicate their lives for being the salt of the earth and light of the world.

Having got its draft constitution approved by Rt. Rev. Dr. John Mulagada, the Bishop of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, the Society embarked on its long journey into the new millennium, covering peoples and nation, missions and charisms. On 2 February 1985, the pioneer members - with the Founder being elected as the Society’s first Director General, Frs. Thomas Alencherry, Mathew Kallikatt, K.V. Augustine and Bros. Thomas Karachira and Jose Oonnukallel made their final commitment to the Society in the presence of Bishop John Mulagada. They knew they were beginning a new vocation that is to save and renew the world with the Good News of the Kingdom. They were now The Heralds of Good News.

The society, at its elementary levels knew well the need for well-trained missionaries. Result was the openings of study houses of various levels at different zones of South India. On June 25, 1985 the Mother House of Formation at Kurukuru opened its avenue to 28 students with Fr. Thomas Alencherry as the first Rector. Various study houses that followed suit in formation were domiciled at Janampet (1990), Pinakadami (1992), Poonamalle (1993), Melavalady (1994), Khammam (1996), Kurnool (2000), Ifakara, Tanzania (2002) et al. The Society’s accentuation on education launched various schools in the following years with academies at Prathipadu (1988) and Yernagudem (1989) among the inaugurals.

The Society knew well that hard tasks of mission were awaiting, that a big part of the globe awaits evangelization. Preparation for the mission was accelerated at various strata. The Society having been erected as a Missionary Society of Apostolic life of Diocesan Right on May 5, 1991, started spreading its missionary wings to different niches of the world. The society’s homegrown missionaries set their entrée into the States in 1991, South Africa and Papua New Guinea in 1995, Tanzania in 1999, Kenya in 2000, Guatemala in 2002, Uganda in 2003, Canada in 2005 and Holland in 2006. Some of the indigenous populace was followers of one or other of the great faiths, while many remained strangers to the very knowledge of Christ, while still others expressly denied His existence, and sometimes even attacked it. But that was no reason for our missionaries to look back. They had burned their boats! They remained with the people, for that was demanded of them by the Master Jesus Christ who sent them. He knew we would…

The home gave more ground for the Society’s mission. Services by the members spread out to various dioceses all over India, taking up parishes and starting various institutions of missionary habiliment. Meanwhile, on 29 December 1993, the first batch of the seminarians were ordained. The Congregation was growing. The following year marked the General elections changing the overall face of administration with fresh body being built up with Fr. Chacko Puthumayil as the new Director General, assisted by Frs. Mathew Kallikatt, P. Thomas, Cherian Pullambrayil and Mathew Panackal. Fr. Jose Kaimlett will from now on be titled as Superior General. On 2 February 1995, as the Society celebrated its Decennium, joy was added with the Generalate in Eluru being inaugurated. The Central administration would now on open out the Society’s mission from Eluru. The next general assembly to be held in 1999 would see Fr. Mathew Kallikatt being elected as the new Director General. The assembly elected Fr. Phillip Kulathinapadickal as the Asst. Director General, and Frs. Mathew Vengaloor, Xavier Thekkumkattil, and Thomas Alencherry as the Councilors. Fr. Babu Kulathunkal will chair the office of Procurator General.

On May 5 1999, the Society was raised to the Pontifical Status with a decree from the Holy See. The missionary confidence and constancy of the members was boosted by this new move of God’s showers of blessing. The Holy Spirit was stirring their hearts for the next. The Lord has prepared the way, and now He calls them to do the same for Him. They were ready.

The new millennium had its natal cries diminishing. The Society reading the needs of better mission decided to do a makeover to suit the mission to the new world. Responding to this pastoral urgency, the Extraordinary General Assembly held in 2004 amended the Constitution, deciding to erect 3 Provinces, and give the members the option to choose between them. With the Holy See approving the amended Constitution, the provinces were inaugurated in the year 2008, under the aegis of the Pontifical Commiserate that oversaw the Society from 2006-2009. Regions were allotted for the better mission of the provinces with St. Paul Province to minister to the South West Region, Mary Queen of Apostles Province to care for South East Region and Blessed Mother Teresa Province to coordinate missions in North India.

With a renewed face, Heralds of Good News would advance the mission under the new General Administration being elected in 2009. Rev. Fr. A. Francis was elected the New Superior General with Rev. Fr. Adackamundackal Joseph to assist him. The central administration would include Rev. Frs. Saji Sebastian, Charles Savarimuthu and Adattu Nixon as Councilors and Frs. Dung Dung Nirdosh and P. Christuraju as the Procurator General and Secretary General respectively.

14 October 2009 marked the Silver Jubilee of the Foundation of HGN. We have reached so long. But we knew we are not yet. There was but one course to pursue… the path of the Nazarene. And we would endeavor new horizons of mission with renewed spirit. The bifurcation of Mother Theresa Province on 5 May 2011 led to the erection of a new Province namely St. John Paul II to serve the South Central Region. Following the General forums of 2011 and 2013, The General Assembly was celebrated from January 21-24, 2015. The new General Administration was set up: Rev. Fr. M. Ignatius – Superior General; Rev. Fr. Kulathinapadickal Philip – Asst. Superior General; Rev. Frs. Kappunkal Thomas, R. Innasimuthu and Jangam Joseph – Councillors; Rev. Fr. Pamplaniyil Saji - Procurator General; and Rev. Fr. Zengol Bazil – Secretary General. Again the Society was blessed with a newborn Divine Mercy Province on 29 October 2017. It was bifurcated from Mary Queen of Apostles to cater to the needs of different needs of the Church. So now the Society functions with five Provinces.

From 21-25, 2021 the General Assembly was celebrated and the new General Administration was elected: Rev. Dr. Mathew Kallikatt - Superior General; Rev. Fr. A. Francis - Asst. Superior General; Rev. Frs. Sagaya Philip, Bala Raju Bandhanadham, Mathew Vengaloor - Councillors; Rev. Fr. A. Silvester - Procurator General; and Rev. Fr. Bala Raju Bandhanadham - Secretary General.

The disciple of Christ has the duty of spreading the Faith. Christ the Lord calls whoever He will from among the number of His disciples, to be with Him and to be sent by Him to preach to the nations. Therefore, by the Holy Spirit, who distributes the charismata as He wills for the common good, He inspires the missionary vocation in the hearts of individuals, and at the same time He raises up in the Church certain institutes which take as their own special task the duty of preaching the Gospel. HGN was one. And we will remain so… because we are The Heralds of Good News…

History of St. Paul Province

AN ODYSSEY OF ST. PAUL PROVINCE

A SYNOPTIC VIEW INTO THE YESTERYEARS OF THE SOUTH-WEST MISSIONARY WING OF THE SOCIETY OF HERALDS OF GOOD NEWS

He taught us to love, and to do it… Love in Action.

Christ Jesus, in sending his disciples on mission urged them to go to the whole world. Knowing the job cumbersome, He promised them the Paraclete, Who would lead them on their path. The disciples, guided by the same Spirit went to the ends of the then World, leaving the rest to the future followers of Christ.

The Missionary Society of HGN, in its divinely-guided growth saw it an existential necessity to amend the Constitutions, based on the signs of the age, and heeding to the missionary call of the Church. The decision of the Society’s Extraordinary General Assembly of 2004 decided to decentralize itself and erect Provinces for the more productive mission. Following this cue from the Centre, St. Paul Province, which was given the jurisdiction of Southwest Region, was officially inaugurated on 8th October 2008, at St. Mary’s Minor Seminary, Karunapuram, Kerala, by His Excellency Most Rev. Agnelo Gracias. St. Paul, the great Missionary Apostle was to be interceded to as the heavenly patron of the Province. The First Provincial Chapter elected Rev. Fr. Siby Peedikayil as the first Provincial Superior. The administrative body included Rev. Fr. Baiju Kalapurayil as the Vice-Provincial, Rev. Fr. Nikson Adattu, Rev. Fr. Selvan Lazar and Rev. Fr. Thomas Olikunnel as Councillors, and Rev. Fr. Sibi Thadathil as the Provincial Procurator. The Team was to administer from the Provincialate set up at Pampady, Kottayam, Kerala.

Being devoted to the single-minded missionary zeal of the Founder Rev. Dr. Jose Kaimlett, the newly erected province ventured into its mission field, which would in the following years cover a wide range extending from educational institutions to care homes to prayer centers and pastoral guidance. The province would send its missionaries to a big portion of Indian states and states Overseas. This mission scheme of the Province helped it to create its own cliché in pastoral works, especially in Kerala, a spiritually rich state. The rapport created by the members would encourage many dioceses across India and the Globe to welcome our Missionaries to their inlands.

The milestones of the yesteryears include the brief note given here. 28th April 2010 marked the Blessing of Good News Priest Home and temporary Provincial House at Pampady by Most Rev. Sebastian Thekethecheril, the Bishop of Vijayapuram, and inauguration by Rev. Fr. A. Francis, the Superior General of HGN. With a roof over, the mission of the province spread in establishing various houses including Good News Asha Bhavan, Vagamon (2010) for the mentally challenged; Good News Ammaveedu, Pampady (2010) for the elderly men and women destitute; Good News Snehabhavan, Kakkoor (2013) for the elderly men destitute.

With the brief yet steady growth, the province stepped into a new phase as the Second Provincial Assembly held on 9th and 10th August 2011, re-elected Rev. Fr. Siby Peedikayil as the Provincial Superior. The election retained Rev. Fr. Baiju Kalpurayil and Rev. Fr. Sibi Thadathil as the Vice-Provincial and Provincial Procurator respectively, and the new council body constituted Rev. Fr. Selvan Lazar, Rev. Fr. Joseph Kandathiparambil and Rev. Fr. Saji Pamplaniyil. The team would lead the province into various mission programs of the new decade with opening of Village chapel at Yernagudem, A.P. in 2012, St. Paul's Hostel (a temporary one) at Miao, Arunachal Pradesh in 2013 and St. Mary's Boys Hostel, Bonakal, Telangana. in 2014. Meanwhile, the mission’s emphasis on education of the underprivileged resulted in erecting good schools in Arunachal Pradesh and the then united states of Andhra Pradesh.

The Third Provincial Assembly held at Pampady (6th – 8th August 2014) elected Rev. Fr. Saji Sebastian as the new Provincial Superior. Rev. Fr. Thomas Olikunnel was elected the Vice-Provincial, and the new council body spotted Rev. Fr. Sibi Thadathil, Rev. Fr. Joseph Kandathiparamnbil, and Rev. Fr. Vinod Plackal. Rev. Fr. Selvan Lazar was appointed as the Provincial Procurator and Rev. Fr. Sinoj Pynadath was appointed as the Provincial Secretary. The works of the new team saw the concretization of many projects including the Extension Block of Good News Asha Bhavan, Vagamon, St. Mary's Girls Hostel at Bonakal, Telangana in 2015, laying of the foundation stone for St. Paul School at Pathralapadu, Telangana and its blessing after the Completion in July 2017 and Blessing of the extension block of Good News Bhavan, Kengeri, Bangalore.

The laudable legacy continued as the fourth Provincial Assembly held between 6th to 8th August 2017 relected the same administraion for a second term of service. It elected for the second term Rev. Fr. Saji Sebastian as its Provincial Superior, Rev. Fr. Thomas Olikunnel as Vice Provincial and Rev. Fr. Sibi Thadathil, Rev. Fr. Joseph Kandathiparambil and Rev. Fr. Vinod Plackal as Councilors. Rev. Fr. Selvan Lazar was appointed as the Provincial Procurator and Rev. Fr. Tomy Ambattu as Provincial Secretary. Major developments during this Administration include the inauguration and blessing of the new concrete building school for St. Paul's school at Dhone khona, Arunachal Pradesh in November 2018, the blessing of the extension block for St. Mary's School, Bonakal, Telangana on 3rd December 2019. Two major milestone of this era was the erection of Cenacle (the new Provincial House) at Konoor-Koratty on 28th December 2020; and the realization of a New Retreat Hall at GNRC Campus on 25th March 2021. The commendable works carried out during this tennure stands high above to tell the world that God exalts the humble.

The Fifth Provincial Assembly held between 21-23 September 2021 witnessed a new face, a fresh start with new members constituting the Provincial Team. Rev. Fr. Selvan Lazar was elected as the new Provincial Superior. Rev. Fr. Saji Pamplaniyil was elected the Vice-Provincial. and the new council body was formed of Rev. Fr. Tony Cheeramkuzhiyil, Rev. Fr. Mervin Varayankunnel and Rev. Fr. Jibin Ambattu. Rev. Fr. Manu Kuttikkattu was appointed Provincial Treasurer and Rev. Fr. Jince Cheenkallel was appointed as Provincial Secretary. The progressive sajourn continued with new ventures. The initiatives of this Provincial Administration included the Renovation and Blessing of St. Mary's Minor Seminary, Karunapuram on 23rd November 2022, the Blessing of St. Paul Tailoring Centre in St. Paul School Campus, Patharlapadu, and laying of the foundation stone for the Hostel Building for St. Paul School, Dhone Khona, Arunachal Pradesh in November 2023.

The Missionaries of the Province, who were sent to different nations in order to be good ministers of Christ, were nourished with the words of faith and with good doctrine, which they drew principally from the Sacred Scriptures, studying the mystery of Christ, whose heralds and witnesses they were to the lands they were sent. Knowing that each member should be well-trained and prepared for the missions, the seminarians are given intensive and holistic formation through various seminaries across the country. The brothers keep up their brotherly-spirit nourished by the periodic gatherings. The priests, including the formators are enriched in their efforts pertaining to their own field of mission get enriched by the retreats and on-going formation programs that the Province offers at regular intervals. The members are also motivated by the blessed acquaintances they had with various personalities, especially the support of the local ordinaries from the respective Dioceses. To name, the list would adorn the encouragements given by many Bishops.

The province with its missionary wings extended to various parts of the world with the members extending their services in India, Italy, Australia, United States, Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, Papua New Guinea etc. We wholeheartedlly pay homage to our deceased Members; Fr. Thomas Alencherry, Fr. Joseph Thundathil and Fr. Ajish Azhakulathil. We have, as per the status of 2023, 85 Permanent Members, of which Most Rev. Siby Mathew Peedikayil, the Bishop of Aitape, PNG and 84 Member Priests. And 70 seminarians in different levels of formation.

Nations are still many to be led to Christ, and so the missionaries remain extremely necessary. We continue what Christ had told, to go to the whole world, to make disciples for him. The St. Paul Province does it...amore in azione...love in action. Its legacy continues to win the imperishable crown.
