Pope Francis’s latest Encyclical, Delexit Nos (He Loved Us), released on October 24, emphasizes devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus while offering a profound reflection on God’s love and its implications for the Church’s mission in today’s world. The encyclical underscores the centrality of love in the Christian faith, drawing inspiration from 1 John 4:19: “We love because He first loved us.”According to the encyclical, contemporary society has become increasingly heartless, mechanical, consumeristic, and dualistic. In response, Pope Francis calls for a renewed hope for a “social miracle” through a deeper devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He envisions a world where all hearts are united in the heart of Jesus, bringing about peace and justice. Pope urges us to ensure that all our actions should reflect the heart of Jesus, which is tender, compassionate, and ever open to the needs of others.
The Encyclical challenges us to go beyond mere words and embrace a love that is active, sacrificial, and self-giving. Pope Francis critiques what he describes as “comfortable Christianity,” characterized by selfishness and individualism. Instead, he calls us to embrace the vocation of bearing Christ’s love “wherever there is need.”The heart is presented as a unifying symbol of our community life. Communities can only thrive through unity and reconciliation—of minds, wills, and spirits. When guided by the Spirit, we are united as brothers and sisters, with reconciliation and peace being the fruits of hearts filled with love. “More than merely living and working together, it is our brotherly love that will make us one.” (Cf. Provincial Directory Art. 40).This Jubilee Year is a time for reconciliation, peace, and hope—a sacred period to mend our relationships with God, one another, and creation. It is an opportunity to confront the suffering caused by war, climate change, and division and to journey toward renewal. Our pilgrimage must be focused on the heart of Jesus, pierced for the salvation of all people without discrimination. Each moment of our lives should remind us of our calling: “We are pilgrim priests ordained for a pilgrim people,” entrusted with the mission of leading them to the Lord through the door of salvation. Let us embody this mission by becoming “Missionaries of Hope.”May this season of Christmas bring hope—hope that unites all people without conditions. Let us walk together toward Him, “He who has loved us.”

PROVINCIAL’S DESK
Year 2024 ends, a year that ends was a year filled with expected and even unexpected events personally - interpersonally, nationally - internationally, was a year of prayer for Catholic Church. ‘Lord teach us to pray’ was the biblical basis chosen for the purpose. A year spent inprayer andin preparation for the Jubilee year 2025 with the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, (a year of hope for a world suffering the impacts of war, the post Covid 19 pandemic traumas, the effects of Global warming / climate crisis). The Pope is calling on all Catholics to renew in the hope of Christ – persons/pilgrims of hope using St. Paul as a guide for this special year.We pray that in the Jubilee year, our faith may be strengthened and that we learn to recognize the Risen Christ with hope in our daily lives. It refers to people who are committed to a better future and are on a journey to discover God’s love and themselves. Pope invites all Christians to pray that each of us become pilgrims of hope as a result of the Jubilee year. Everyone knows what it is to hope, in the heart of every individual, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. We overcome any adverse situation with aray of hope even the worse ones, we enable the people surrounding us with the same ray of hope because hope does not disappoint us as our heavenly patron says. (Rom. 5/5)The book of Job offers hope in the following lines, “Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning. You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court your favour”- Job 11:17-19. “A generous prayer is never presented in vain; the petition may be refused, but the petitioner is always, I believe, rewarded by some gracious visitation.”- Robert Louis Stevenson“’Hope’ is the thing with feathers, That perches in the soulAnd sings the tune without the words, And never stops at allAnd sweetest in the Gale is heard, And sore must be the storm that could abash the little bird, That kept so many warmI’ve heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest seaYet, never, in extremity,It asked a crumb of me.”- Emily DickinsonTwo men visit a Zen master. The first man says: “I’m thinking of moving to this town. What’s it like?” The Zen master asks: “What was your old town like?” The first man responds: “It was dreadful. Everyone was hateful. I hated it.”The Zen master says: “This town is very much the same. I don’t think you should move here.”The first man leaves and the second man comes in.The second man says: “I’m thinking of moving to this town. What’s it like?”The Zen master asks: “What was your old town like?”The second man responds: “It was wonderful. Everyone was friendly and I was happy. Just interested in a change now.”The Zen master says: “This town is very much the same. I think you will like it here.”What we seek is what we find. The reasons why you do what you do matter as much, if not more, as what you end up doing. Because they shape how you seek. So, ultimately, they’ll also determine what you find.Do unto others as you would have them do to you (Mt. 7/12) is much the same as this zen message. Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World Gaudium et Spes from Vatican II documents, Deus Caritas Est of Pope Benedict XVI on Christian Love, Spe Salvi of Pope Benedict XVI on Christian Hope, Spes non Confundit of Pope Francis a Bull of Indiction of the Ordinary Jubilee of the Year 2025 that hearts may be filled with hope, and culminates in Dilexit nos of Pope Francis – the Encyclical Letter on the Human and Divine Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ. These are some the recent teachings of the Church on this theme of Hope. Let our prayer during this Jubilee year be, O Most Sacred Heart: Jesus, meek and humble of Heart. Make our hearts like unto Thine.Would like to wish you all a Blessed Christmas and a Grace-filled News Year 2025.

NEWS FROM THE PASTORAL MINISTRY & COMMUNITIES

MISSION IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Dear Fathers and Brothers, We are happy to share news from our mission in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands (PNGSI). This year, we celebrate 29 years of our missionaries present in the Papua New Guinea mission. We thank God for giving us strength and joy through every challenge. Our mission in PNGSI is based on faith, kindness, and moving forward in the face of challenges and hardships. We kindly ask for your prayers and support, especially as we face many difficulties due to various reasons.
Parish Ministry
Our parish work is a big part of our mission in PNGSI. Through Masses, prayer gatherings, and catechism classes, our missionaries help communities grow stronger in faith. We visit villages, even in faraway places, to bring comfort and spiritual support. Even though there are difficulties, like local conflicts, illness, trouble caused by rascals, community issues with school grounds and mission ground, our missionaries are trying to bring hope and unity to everyone.
School Ministry
Education is very important in our mission. In our Catholic schools, we help students grow both in their studies and in their faith. Our teachers and staff work hard to create a safe and positive place for learning. We want our students to become caring and responsible leaders in the future. We have elementary, primary, high, secondary and technical schools and also looking after seminarians.
29 Years of Missionary Work in Various Dioceses of PNGSI
This year, we celebrate 29 years of mission work in various dioceses across PNGSI. Our missionaries have touched many lives and strengthened communities. Through parish ministries and educational programs, we continue the good work started by those who came before us. This milestone shows us how faith and determination can build flourishing communities.
Concluding 25th Anniversary of St. John’s Catholic Church, Irawi
We are about to conclude Silver Jubilee of St. John’s Catholic Church in Irawi on January 12, 2025. The parish was started by our missionary in January 2000. This celebration marks 25 years of faith in the Irawi community. It will be a joyful day with prayers, thanksgiving, and fellowship as we look back on the church’s journey. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this special day. There will be the launching of the silver jubilee of sisters present in St. John’s catholic church, irawi on the same day.
Challenges We Face
Our mission work has its share of challenges. Recently, local tribal conflicts, killings near mission stations, community issues on schools and mission grounds, sickness and deprived of basic needs due to lack of proper transport, walking distances to reach out mission stations have made it harder to work in some areas of PNGSI. Despite these struggles, our missionaries stay strong, drawing courage from prayer, community, and the kindness of our supporters.
Mission Updates
• Many dioceses in PNGSI are having the celebration year of Eucharist and first Eucharistic congress•
Fr. Johny is having orientation to get ready for the work in PNGSI.
• Bishop Siby Mathew has gone to India for medical treatment, and we pray for his quick recovery.
• Fr. Johnson (Mendi) has returned from holidays and is keeping fine.• Frs. Tomy, Johnson (Vanimo), and Pradeesh are all doing well and continue their ministry joyfully. We kindly ask for your prayers for peace in our communities, for protection of our missionaries, and for the strength to continue our work. Your support means so much to us, especially in these tough times.Pope Francis’ recent four days visit to Papua New Guinea was a great event, bringing a message of peace, unity, and spiritual encouragement to the nation. During a Mass at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, attended by around 35,000 people, he reminded Papua New Guineans ongoing challenges of tribal violence, urging people to choose peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation over conflict and disharmonious traditionsIn Vanimo, a remote town on the northern coast, the Pope further highlighted his message by distributing humanitarian aid and expressing the Church’s commitment to supporting isolated communities. His visit included cultural ceremonies and traditional dances, where he connected with locals, emphasizing the importance of valuing both faith and the rich cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea. (Vatican Website)Thank you for being part of our mission. May God bless you for your kindness and prayers as we work together to serve the people of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.Happy Christmas and Happy New Year 2025
